Alan Williams

I'm a co-founder and software engineer at Isogonal, working on machine learning and optimization. I'm also the principal software engineer at ProvisionAI, a logistics optimization startup in the USA. In the last several years I've also worked under contract at RetailMeNot, Revionics, and Translucent as a Staff/Senior Data Scientist.

I started my career at Schumberger as a petroleum engineer in China and the Middle East. Then I designed hydropower dams in New Zealand and post-tensioned concrete structures in Singapore at Holmes, Aurecon and Riley, achieving chartered professional status in geotech and structural engineering.

Then I moved to software engineering and ML, and worked on optimising bids for second-price online ad auctions at Ströer Labs, and search relevance, query decomposition, and product recommendation at SLI Systems. After this I started Isoognal to investigate applying ML in industrial settings.

I'm interested in software that can act autonomously and safely in the world, particularly in industrial and healthcare fields. Like in science fiction, I like the idea of these systems being taken for granted, invisible but useful. I also try to design systems that can be evolved by domain experts and not only software specialists. Data and outputs change over years, from new machinery being installed into electrical grids to new types of health issues.

In my spare time I like being in mountain wildernesses, paragliding, kayaking, trail running, and climbing. I also love puzzles, math, and making things in my workshop - see the blog and projects.
