Alan Williams
I'm a software engineer and product development specialist. I'm fascinated by physics, design, and language.
In 2013 founded a company to develop automation software for the energy, civil engineering, and healthcare sectors. For the last several years I have also been working as a contract Lead Software Engineer or Data Scientist at firms like ProvisionAI, RetailMeNot, Revionics, and Translucent.
I started my career at Schumberger as a petroleum engineer in the Middle East. Then I designed hydropower dams in New Zealand and post-tensioned concrete structures in Singapore at Holmes, Aurecon and Riley. Following this I worked on optimising bids for second-price online ad auctions at Ströer Labs, and search relevance, query decomposition, and product recommendation at SLI Systems.
I'm interested in software that can act autonomously and safely in the world. Like in science fiction, I like the idea of these systems being taken for granted, invisible but useful. I also try to design systems that can be evolved by domain experts - as data and output change over the years.
In my spare time I like being in mountain wildernesses, paragliding, kayaking, trail running, and climbing. I also love puzzles, math, and making things in my workshop - see the blog and projects.
